❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a value calculated based on height and weight, used to provide a preliminary assessment of whether a person’s weight falls within a healthy range. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)².
What are the differences between WHO standards and Chinese standards?
According to WHO standards, a BMI of 25 or higher is defined as overweight, and 30 or higher as obese. Chinese standards are stricter: a BMI of 24 or higher is considered overweight, and 28 or higher is considered obese. This is because Asian populations typically have higher body fat percentages than Western populations at the same BMI; therefore, using lower thresholds allows for a more accurate assessment of health risks.
What are the limitations of BMI?
BMI does not take into account factors such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, or bone density. Athletes or people with well-developed muscles may have a higher BMI but a healthy body fat percentage; older adults with reduced muscle mass may have a normal BMI but a higher body fat percentage. BMI thresholds also vary for pregnant women, children, and certain population groups. It is recommended to assess overall health by considering a combination of indicators, such as waist circumference and body fat percentage.
What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) refers to the minimum amount of energy the human body requires to sustain life while in a state of complete rest (fasting, at room temperature, lying down), accounting for approximately 60–75% of total daily energy expenditure. To calculate BMR, you need to enter your age and gender. Mifflin-St Jeor formula: BMR for men = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) – 5 × age + 5; BMR for women = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) – 5 × age – 161.
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is the ratio of the BMI value to the upper limit of the normal range (25). A BMI Prime value of < 0.74 indicates underweight, 0.74–1.00 indicates normal weight, and > 1.00 indicates overweight. For example, when BMI = 22.5, BMI Prime = 22.5/25 = 0.90, indicating that the current weight is 90% of the upper limit of the normal range.
How do I export or save my data?
You can use the "Copy Results" button to copy your current BMI data to the clipboard; use the "Export Image" button to save the results as a PNG image; or click the "Export CSV" button in "Measurement History" to export all your history to a CSV file that can be opened in Excel. All data is stored locally in your browser and is not uploaded to any server.

💡 What is a BMI calculator?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an internationally recognized measure of the relationship between weight and height, first proposed in the 19th century by the Belgian mathematician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)².

WHO International Standards:

  • < 18.5 — Underweight (low body weight)
  • 18.5 - 24.9 — Normal (Healthy Weight)
  • 25.0 - 29.9 — Overweight (excess body weight)
  • ≥ 30.0 — Obesity (Requires Attention)

Chinese Standards (Stricter):

  • < 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 - 23.9 — Normal
  • 24.0 - 27.9 — Overweight
  • ≥ 28.0 — Obesity

⚠️ BMI is a screening tool and cannot be used to directly diagnose body fat percentage or overall health. Assessment results for specific groups, such as athletes, older adults, and pregnant women, may be inaccurate; please consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation.
