Array.pop() Remove the last item

pop removes the last element and returns it; an empty array returns undefined without throwing. With push it forms a stack (LIFO).

📝 Syntax

const removed = array.pop();

Returns:The removed element, or undefined on an empty array.

Mutates the original:Yes (in place)

▶ Example

Edit the code, press Run, and see the result in the output panel:

Output:

💡 Tip pop + push make a stack (LIFO); shift + unshift make a queue (FIFO).

❓ FAQ

Qpop vs shift?
Apop removes the last (O(1)); shift removes the first (O(n) — everything shifts left).
QDoes pop return the removed element?
AYes — the removed element itself. An empty array returns undefined without throwing.
QHow to remove at a specific position?
AUse splice(index, 1). pop and shift only work at the ends.
