❓ FAQ
QWhat does the error `SyntaxError: 'await' outside function` mean?
A`await` can only be written inside an `async def` function. Writing `await` in a normal function, at module top level, or in a class body triggers this error.
QWhat is the difference between `await` and a blocking wait?
A`await` suspends the current coroutine but the event loop can still schedule other tasks — cooperative concurrency. Blocking calls like `time.sleep` stall the whole thread and the event loop cannot run either.
QCan a normal function `await` something?
AYou can only `await` «awaitable» objects: coroutine objects, `asyncio.Task`, `Future`, or custom objects implementing `__await__`. The return value of a normal function is not directly awaitable.
