Next.js Deploy Next.js Deployment

Vercel is the first choice for deploying Next.js — zero configuration, with support for ISR, image optimization and edge functions — but you can also self-host on Node or export a static site. The generic checklist before going live is the same everywhere: environment variables, a production build, SEO metadata and HTTPS on the domain; skipping one step can leave you with a blank page in production.

SinceNext.js 14 / 15 hosted on Vercel (recommended); self-hosting needs Node 18+

ℹ️ Info The editor transpiles JSX to JavaScript and renders the real UI in a sandbox; components mount automatically — no manual render call needed.

📝 Syntax

# Verify the production build locally first
npm run build && npm start

# Deploy with the Vercel CLI (or push to GitHub for automatic deploys)
npx vercel # preview environment
npx vercel --prod # production environment

# Configure environment variables in the platform dashboard, never commit .env
NEXT_PUBLIC_API_BASE=https://api.example.com # ends up in the client bundle
DATABASE_URL=...                               # server only (no NEXT_PUBLIC_ prefix)

⚙️ Parameters

vercel --prodDeploys the current directory to production; without --prod it produces a preview link for review.
NEXT_PUBLIC_ prefixOnly variables carrying this prefix are bundled into the client code; every other variable stays server-side, which keeps your secrets safe.

Returns:No return value — the deployment flow is described in the syntax and the example.

▶ Example

The example runs out of the box: it auto-renders when expanded, and edits take effect instantly.

Output:

Simulation: an interactive deployment checklist whose four boxes cover environment variables, the production build, SEO metadata and domain HTTPS. As you tick them the readiness counter at the bottom grows from 0/4, and once everything is checked the status turns green with Ready to launch; unticking any item brings back the pending message immediately.

💡 Key Points

⚠️ Warning Environment variables only take effect in the deployment platform dashboard or in the build environment, and .env.local never enters the repository; after changing a variable you must redeploy for it to be injected.
💡 Tip Accept changes with preview deployments: every PR automatically gets its own preview link, so confirm it before merging and going live instead of testing in production.
ℹ️ Info A static export (output: 'export') supports neither ISR nor server API routes, so check whether the project depends on those features before choosing it.

❓ FAQ

Q Can Next.js be deployed without Vercel?
A Yes. You can self-host on Node (npm start / Docker), deploy to a VPS with PM2, or export a purely static site to any static host — only features such as ISR and image optimization then need your own configuration, or have to be dropped.
Q Why does the production page go blank or complain about a missing environment variable?
A In most cases a NEXT_PUBLIC_ variable was never configured in the platform dashboard, or it was configured without rebuilding — these variables are injected at build time, so a new deploy is required after the change.
Q Do I have to run commands manually for every deployment?
A No. Connect the GitHub repository and pushing triggers a deploy: a PR gets a preview link and merging into the main branch goes live automatically; you can also customize the CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions.
