The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a lunar calendar that takes the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE as its epoch. Each Islamic year consists of 12 lunar months, totaling 354 or 355 days — approximately 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.
Algorithm Info
- Kuwaiti Algorithm: An arithmetic calendar based on a 30-year leap cycle. Years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 29 of each cycle are leap years (355 days); the rest are common years (354 days).
- Umm al-Qura: The official calendar of Saudi Arabia, based on astronomical observations. When supported by your browser, it can be used via the Intl.DateTimeFormat API.
Important Notes
- Different algorithms may produce results that differ by 1 day — this is normal.
- Actual month start dates may differ from calculated results due to local moon sighting.
- For Ramadan, Eid, and other holidays, please follow your local mosque announcements.
